2015 Transparency & Thomson Reuters Foundation Photo Competition

Corruption has devastating effects that can be difficult to illustrate. But images are also powerful tools in raising awareness and bringing about change. So we are looking for photos that show how corruption affects people’s lives.

Application Deadline: June 12 2015

Contest theme:
Illustrate the negative effects that corruption has on your world.

Images have the power to bring about change. They evoke emotion and deliver information that can spur people to action. This is true in the fight against corruption, but capturing the devastating effect that corruption has on people’s lives is hard.

That’s why Transparency International, the Thomson Reuters Foundation and the International Anti-Corruption Conference are sponsoring Capturing Corruption, a photography competition that is looking for imaginative and powerful images that show the corrosive effects of corruption.

Eligibility:
Whether you’re a student who photographs as a hobby, a professional photographer or are just looking for inspiration to use your new camera– we encourage everyone* to apply.

In order to be an eligible participant of the photo competition, applicants MUST:

Be 18 years old or older on 15 July 2015.
Submit a photo in digital format and which meets the criteria set out in the Guidelines/How to enter section below. No print or video submissions will be accepted.

What can you win?
There will be three winners in each of the two categories, plus the chance for runners up to have their work published on both the Transparency International and Thomson Reuters Foundation websites.
The two age categories are: (1) 18-30 years old* and (2) 31 years old and older.

The jury will award three winners in each category:

1st prize: A paid trip to Malaysia to participate in the a 16th International Anti-Corruption Conference (2-4 September 2015) and participation in a Thomson Reuters Foundation Photo Journalist course. The all-expenses paid course will combine theory with practical work, and a focus on building a portfolio worthy of publication on the Reuters news wire.

2st prize: €500

3st prize: €250

The photographic work of all winners and seven runners-up in each category will be published on the Transparency International website and the Thomson Reuters Foundation website.
* The competition youth category is in memory of Jesse Garcia who passed away in 2013. He was dedicated to bringing to life the work of Transparency International in images.
The deadline for submissions is 12 June 2015.
The winners will be announced in July 2015.

Jury:

The photos will be judged using the following criteria:
  • impact (compelling subject matter and caption),
  • artistic interpretation (composition and style) and
  • technical skills (focus, colour and use of light)
  • The competition will go through two rounds of evaluation. The first round of photos will be reviewed and shortlisted by the Transparency International Secretariat. Shortlisted photographs will then be reviewed by the jury.

African Start-Up Award – Call For Applications Now Open

African Start-Up Award – Call For Applications Now Open. Deadline: June 15, 2015:
New York Forum Africa is pleased to announce the 1st edition of the African Start-Up Award!

Africa has an abundance of ideas and talent but African start-ups lack access to capital, especially in the first phase of development.  At last year’s New York Forum AFRICA, the results of the Train My Generation survey highlighted this challenge: 56% of young Africans pointed to their difficulty in finding funding.

In this context, Richard Attias, Founder of the New York Forum Institute and the NYFA, has created the African Start-up Award in partnership with Le Point Afrique and France24. The Award will support talent and the most creative initiatives, particularly those with a social impact component. Four laureates will be announced live at this year’s NYFA in Libreville, Gabon, August 28-30, and will share a 100,000 euros prize fund.

Don’t miss this opportunity! All entries should be submitted online by June 15, 2015.
For any questions about the award please email the organisers at: Award@richardattiasassociates.com or visit the website here: http://www.ny-forum-africa.com/en/african-start-up-award
